About Us
The firm was founded in 1989 by the Mother and Son team of Heather and Nicholas Mowat. Mother and Son amazingly managed to get on together and the firm prospered. The original premises were in a small shop in St Mary's Street, just off the Royal Mile in Edinburgh, but as the business expanded they soon outgrew the premises there and moved to a larger shop in Rose Street, in the centre of Edinburgh. The partners were extremely innovative and came up with many original ideas, such as 'Dial a Shirt' scheme for those lost souls who had left their shirts behind or needed a clean shirt- it caught the public's imagination and their small van could be seen careering about the town at all hours of the day and night! Then Nick - the man with the design ideas - came up with the brilliant idea of Fancy Back Evening Shirts in all sorts of weird and wonderful designs. These shirts were worn by the Scottish Rugby Team on the night they won the 'Grand Slam' in 1990.
Naturally they were widely photographed in the National Press - wonderful marketing for the firm. Since then the firm has expanded into Warehouse and Factory premises in Portobello, where they service the Commercial Trade with Shirts, Ties, Trousers and recently, and very successfully, Kilts. The youngest son, Philip, on completion of his University Degree, has joined the firm and that has allowed Mother to take a back seat. Philip tries to keep his older brother under control by looking after the purse strings. More and more, the emphasis of their products is on a Scottish Theme, and many celebrities, including Sean Connery, Alex Salmond and Ronnie Browne of the Corries are to be seen wearing one or other of their products.
